Air France and Ebola: Why some crews can no longer enter the United States

Date:

A decision by US authorities related to the Ebola outbreak in Central Africa is beginning to have concrete effects on air travel. Some AirFrance who recently operated flights to Kinshasa are now barred from entering the United States for a specified period.

This situation is forcing the company to adapt part of its operational organization and is fueling discussions between management and employee representatives. For tourism professionals, this case illustrates once again how a regional health crisis can have immediate international repercussions.

Why is Air France affected by Ebola-related restrictions?

Since May 2026, the Democratic Republic of Congo has been facing a new Ebola outbreak. In response to this situation, US authorities have tightened entry requirements for certain individuals who have recently traveled to several countries in Central and East Africa.

According to TourMaG, the United States is suspending entry for certain foreign nationals who have been in the Democratic Republic of Congo, Uganda or South Sudan in the past 21 days.

This measure now also applies to certain commercial flight crew operating on the route between Paris and Kinshasa.

Immediate consequences for crew organization

Air France currently continues to operate its service to Kinshasa with several weekly flights.

But the American decision now complicates the management of rotations. A crew member who recently completed a mission to the Congolese capital may find themselves temporarily unavailable for certain assignments to the United States.

According to UNAC, the union representing commercial flight crew at Air France, schedules are currently being adapted to take into account this new regulatory constraint.

The unions are demanding discussions with management

The situation has led several staff representatives to request the opening of specific discussions with the company.

UNAC indicates that it has requested the organization of an extraordinary meeting dedicated to the operational consequences and working conditions of the crews concerned.

Among the topics discussed was the possibility of allowing employees who wish to do so to no longer be assigned to the line linking Paris to Kinshasa.

Air France applies the rules imposed by the countries it serves

The company reminds passengers that it is required to comply with the entry requirements defined by the states it serves.

Air France also specifies that passengers affected by the new American restrictions are informed before their departure.

Travel modification solutions have also been put in place for some customers impacted by these measures.

US citizens and permanent residents of the United States remain permitted to enter US territory, under certain conditions set by US authorities.

Increased vigilance for the entire travel sector

This situation goes beyond Air France alone. It serves as a reminder that health and regulatory restrictions can quickly affect airlines, travelers, and the entire tourism industry.

For travel agencies, tour operators and companies in the sector, monitoring entry requirements and government measures remains a strategic issue.

The applicable rules may change rapidly depending on the health situation and decisions taken by national authorities.

Air France and Ebola: a case closely monitored by the aviation sector

At this stage, no suspension of the Paris-Kinshasa route has been announced by Air France.

But the observed consequences on crew management already show that international health decisions can have direct repercussions on air operations and on the organization of companies.

The evolving situation in the Democratic Republic of Congo and any potential adjustments to US regulations will continue to be closely monitored by tourism and air transport professionals.
