The Newark project is part of a broader transformation of British Airways' lounge network. The airline officially refers to a new global design concept, combining contemporary British style with elements specific to each destination.
This Global Lounge Concept has notably been deployed in the new lounges opened in Miami and Dubai in 2025.
In Miami, British Airways and Gensler have designed a 13,000-square-foot (approximately 1,200 square meters) space that can accommodate more than 220 travelers. The airline describes it as its largest wholly owned lounge outside of London.
The design incorporates references to Miami's Art Deco architecture. The concept announced for Newark is similar, but with a visual identity linked to New Jersey.
According to the trade press, the Newark renovation is part of a much larger program to modernize British Airways lounges. The airline has notably renovated several spaces in Lagos, Singapore, Seattle, Washington, and London in recent years, while new lounges have opened in Miami and Dubai.
British Airways is already planning further investments in the United States
Newark will not be the last American project. British Airways has confirmed plans for future investments in its Boston and San Francisco lounges in 2027.
These operations are part of the £7 billion transformation program announced by the company for 2024. This program covers not only lounges, but also cabins, digital tools, IT systems and several components of the passenger experience.
What happens to British Airways passengers during the works?
This is the point that remains the least precise as of August 5, 2026. British Airways officially confirms the closure of its Galleries Lounge in Newark until summer 2027, but its page dedicated to the airport does not yet detail an equivalent temporary solution for all eligible travelers.
Business Traveller reports that some affected passengers are currently receiving meal vouchers. Therefore, this alternative access should not be taken for granted. For travel agencies and TMCs, the verifiable information to communicate today is simple: the British Airways lounge in Newark is closed, and no general replacement solution has yet been officially detailed by the airline.
A project to follow until summer 2027
British Airways serves Newark from Terminal B. Business, First Class passengers and some loyalty program members are usually eligible for lounge access depending on their ticket or status.
The closure for several months will therefore significantly alter the ground experience for some premium passengers departing from Newark. The situation should be checked before each trip until British Airways publishes the final arrangements applicable during the works.
