When a destination hosts a global event, an entire tourism ecosystem springs into action. This is precisely what is happening in Ethiopia. Two years before COP32 scheduled for Addis Ababa in 2027, the country boasts one of the fastest rates of hotel construction on the African continent. According to the specialized press and data from W Hospitality Group's 2026 report, several thousand rooms are currently under development to prepare for the arrival of international delegations.
Behind this spectacular acceleration lies a clear logistical objective: to house the tens of thousands of participants expected for the major United Nations climate conference.
Summary
A rapidly growing African hotel pipeline
The African hotel sector is currently experiencing a particularly dynamic phase of development. According to the 2026 report by W Hospitality Group, the continent's hotel pipeline now reaches more than 123,000 rooms spread across approximately 675 projects.
In this rapidly expanding landscape, Ethiopia is among the most active emerging markets. The country currently has nearly 6,000 hotel rooms under development across more than thirty projects.

But it is above all the speed of execution that is attracting the attention of analysts. According to the report's data, nearly 80% of the rooms in the pipeline are already under construction. This rate places Ethiopia among the most advanced markets on the continent in terms of hotel project completion.
By comparison, several major African markets show lower completion rates, highlighting the particular dynamics of the Ethiopian market.
COP32 as a catalyst for development
According to the hotel industry press, this acceleration is largely due to preparations for COP32. The United Nations climate conference is scheduled to take place in Addis Ababa in 2027 and could bring together tens of thousands of participants from around the world.
An event of this magnitude represents a major logistical challenge for the Ethiopian capital. Today, Addis Ababa has approximately 25,000 hotel rooms, a level considered insufficient to absorb the influx of visitors expected during an international summit of this size.
Local authorities and private investors have therefore accelerated hotel development in order to increase the city's accommodation capacity.
Hotel projects currently underway in the capital
Several initiatives are currently underway to prepare for the event. In addition to new construction, some existing facilities are undergoing renovation programs to meet the international standards expected at a world summit.
The private sector also plays an important role in this dynamic. Local investment groups are actively involved in the creation of new hotel infrastructure, while several international chains continue their expansion on the African continent.
According to the trade press, some acquisitions also aim to reposition existing hotels in international collections in order to attract business and conference clients.
In several cases, hotel projects that had been put on hold in recent years have been relaunched in order to meet the COP32 timetable.
An event that could transform Ethiopian tourism
Beyond the event itself, COP32 could act as a catalyst for the country's tourism industry. The infrastructure developed to host international delegations will remain in place long after the conference.
For Addis Ababa, the stakes therefore go beyond simply hosting the climate summit. The capital could leverage these investments to strengthen its position as a business tourism and conference destination in East Africa.
In my view, this is precisely where the strategic interest of this project lies. Ethiopia is not yet a major destination for international hotels, but an event of the magnitude of a COP can act as a real accelerator of tourism transformation.
If the announced projects materialize on schedule, Addis Ababa could take a significant step forward and establish itself as one of the most important business and conference hubs on the African continent.
