EXPLORA III: The solar eclipse that could boost luxury bookings in 2026

Date:

Summer 2026 could hold a surprise for the luxury cruise market. With theEXPLORA III, Explora Journeys is not simply adding a ship to its fleet. The company is launching its first ship powered by liquefied natural gas (LNG) and is banking on a program focused on the Far North, exclusive experiences, and a very rare event: the total solar eclipse of August 12, 2026.

For tourism professionals, this inaugural season illustrates several strong trends observed in the premium segment: the rise of coolcation, the search for unique experiences, growing interest in scientific tourism and increased attention to environmental issues, according to the specialized press.

EXPLORA III is banking on the Far North for its launch

The first departure of the EXPLORA III is scheduled for August 3, 2026. After a route linking Barcelona to Lisbon, the ship will head towards Northern Europe, Iceland and then Greenland before reaching North America.

Explora Journeys indicates that it has designed a summer season without repeating itineraries, a relatively rare choice in the cruise industry where identical rotations are generally preferred.

The program notably includes extended stopovers in several destinations such as Stockholm, Reykjavik or Quebec, as well as the introduction of new ports for the brand, including Bergen, Flåm, Riga and Tallinn.

The solar eclipse of August 12, 2026 as a highlight of the season

One of the most striking elements of this program remains the cruise positioned to allow observation of the total solar eclipse of August 12, 2026.

To accompany this event, several speakers are expected to be on board.

Science presenter and adventurer Huw James will join the cruise on August 10. Helen Sharman, Britain's first astronaut, will embark on August 11 to give a talk on space exploration. Lewis Pugh, United Nations Ambassador for the Oceans, will participate in a leg of the journey between Bergen and Copenhagen from August 22 to 25.

This programming illustrates the growing interest of cruise lines in cultural, scientific and educational experiences aimed at an upscale clientele.

First Explora Journeys ship powered by LNG

EXPLORA III also marks an important milestone in the development of the Explora Journeys fleet.

The ship becomes the company's first to be powered by liquefied natural gas. It will also incorporate several technologies designed to reduce its environmental impact, including shore power capabilities.

Reducing emissions and improving energy performance are now among the priorities declared by the entire cruise industry.

Rolex, Cartier, Piaget and Chopard on board

In terms of customer experience, Explora Journeys also announces the arrival of new commercial and gastronomic offers.

The Rolex boutique, already present on EXPLORA I, will be back on EXPLORA III. Passengers will also find several luxury brands such as Cartier, Piaget, and Chopard.

On the catering side, the company plans to launch "The Cellar by Explora Journeys", presented as a major collection of wines at sea, as well as "The Chef's Table by Explora Journeys", a concept of personalized menus developed with passengers.

Why EXPLORA III is already attracting the interest of tourism professionals

Beyond the launch of a new ship, this programming reflects a broader evolution in the premium travel market.

Routes to the Norwegian fjords, Iceland, or Greenland are attracting increasing interest from travelers seeking cooler weather during the summer months. This trend, often referred to as a "coolcation," has intensified in recent years.

At the same time, high-spending travelers are placing increasing importance on exclusive experiences, rare events, and meetings with experts.

EXPLORA III brings together several of these trends in a single summer program.

EXPLORA III, a launch closely watched in the luxury sector

Between the solar eclipse of August 12, 2026, the Nordic itineraries, the LNG propulsion and the new experiences offered on board, the EXPLORA III is one of the most anticipated launches in the luxury cruise segment for the year 2026.

For specialist agencies and high-end travel professionals, this inaugural season offers above all an interesting indicator of the expectations that now shape premium tourism: exclusivity, personalization, discovery and experiences that are difficult to reproduce elsewhere.
