Gen Z and travel: this new expectation could disrupt loyalty programs

Date:

Gen Z isn't just asking for points or discounts. A study published by Agoda shows that the young Asian travelers surveyed are looking for short breaks, experiences, and services accessible from a single digital platform. For banks, airlines, and loyalty programs, travel is thus becoming a field for commercial integration.

The results are from Agoda's 2026 Travel Outlook report and its 2026 Sustainable Travel Survey . They relate to Asian travelers and therefore cannot be automatically applied to the entire global Gen Z population.

Agoda is also a booking platform that sells accommodations, flights, and activities. Its recommendations on integrating travel into loyalty programs also align with its business positioning.

Gen Z places experiences at the heart of travel

Among Gen Z members surveyed by Agoda in Asia, 32% cited cultural discovery as one of their main travel motivations. Outdoor activities reached 30% and culinary experiences 28%.

These percentages show that on-site activities play a significant role in the responses. However, they do not demonstrate that accommodation, transportation, or price have become secondary factors in the final decision.

According to the trade press, these results could encourage tourism operators to link hotel and flight bookings with those for tours, restaurants, and activities. However, this is a business opportunity, not a definitive conclusion reached by the study.

Gen Z and travel: young travelers now expect a fully integrated booking experience, from choosing the destination to loyalty rewards.

Short stays planned several times a year

Agoda reports that 73% of Gen Z respondents plan to take between one and six trips per year. Furthermore, 86% say they prefer stays of between one and seven nights.

These results describe travel intentions. They do not necessarily correspond to the number of departures that will actually take place in 2026.

The full report is based on a survey of Agoda customers in several Asia-Pacific markets. However, publications focusing on Gen Z do not specify the exact number of respondents belonging to this generation, nor the detailed breakdown by country.

It would therefore be an exaggeration to claim that all of Gen Z now prefers short breaks. The study measures a trend reported within the demographic surveyed by Agoda.

Agoda wants to integrate loyalty into the booking process

Agoda's main proposal is to bring together search, booking, points accumulation and their use in a single application or website.

Thanks to a white-label solution, a bank, airline or loyalty operator can display a travel inventory provided by an external partner while retaining its own interface.

The customer can then search for accommodation, flights, or activities without leaving the program's digital environment. The branded company retains the visible business relationship, while a third-party provider supplies all or part of the technology and inventory.

Agoda cites its collaborations with Southwest Airlines' Rapid Rewards program and China Airlines' StayMiles platform as examples. These confirm that this model already exists. However, they do not allow us to determine its effect on long-term loyalty or on partners' revenue.

Sustainability appears in the responses of Gen Z

Agoda's 2026 Sustainable Travel Survey was conducted among 1,036 people in eight Asian markets. In the results focusing on Gen Z, 23% of respondents stated that they travel off-season to reduce their environmental impact.

Agoda also indicates that 38% are actively searching for accommodations with recognized sustainability certification.

These responses measure stated preferences. They do not prove that travelers systematically book a certified offer or that they are willing to pay more for it.

These figures should also be distinguished from the results covering all generations surveyed. Across the entire Asian survey, 48% of travelers reported traveling off-season to reduce crowds, and 37% opted for certified accommodations.

What professionals can actually take away from this

For loyalty programs, the study confirms the value of examining the role of travel within their applications. Integrating flights, accommodations, or activities can reduce the number of steps required for a booking and increase the opportunities to redeem points.

However, this integration involves several operational issues: transparency on the actual supplier, management of personal data, cancellation conditions, after-sales service and the real value of rewards.

The presence of all services in a single application does not, in itself, guarantee Gen Z adoption. Price, availability, simplicity of process and quality of support remain determining factors.

Environmental claims must also be verifiable. A filter dedicated to responsible accommodations is only valuable if the displayed certifications are based on criteria that are identifiable and understandable to the customer.

Gen Z and travel: a trend to follow, but not to generalize

Data published by Agoda paints a picture of young Asian travelers attracted to experiences, short stays, and integrated digital services.

They do not demonstrate that traditional loyalty programs will disappear, nor that integrating reservations will automatically generate more loyalty. This effectiveness will need to be evaluated based on actual usage, conversion rates, repurchase frequency, and the value of the benefits offered.

For travel professionals, the most tangible signal lies elsewhere: points can no longer be studied separately from the booking process. The way a reward is searched for, paid for, booked, and used is now part of a single digital experience.
