Huttopia is no longer just a network of nature campsites. The Lyon-based group, created in 1999 by Céline and Philippe Bossanne, is gradually establishing itself as an integrated player in outdoor tourism, with activities in accommodation, industry, technology, artificial intelligence and the hotel and restaurant sector.
In an outdoor hospitality market characterized by holidaymakers' budget constraints and the consolidation of major operators, Huttopia has followed a unique trajectory. According to the trade press, the group boasts annual growth of between 15% and 20% and currently operates nearly 190 campsites.
Summary
A nature-focused positioning in contrast to campsite clubs
Huttopia's strategy is based first and foremost on a clear choice: to prioritize natural, human-scale sites, rather than highly equipped complexes focused on leisure infrastructure. This approach allows the group to differentiate itself in a sector where some growth has been built around all-inclusive camping resorts, water parks, and mass entertainment.
The model also relies on the gradual acquisition of existing, often underutilized, sites. Huttopia boasts expertise in transforming low-revenue campsites into more structured destinations, without severing their natural connection to the local area. This approach took on a new dimension with the acquisition, announced in January 2026, of the 18 Terracamps campsites from the Aquadis group, a transaction presented as Huttopia's first acquisition of an entire network.

The return of bare plots is becoming strategic
One of the most important signals for tourism professionals concerns the increase in bare pitches. Tents, vans, caravans, motorhomes and road trips are regaining a central place in usage, driven by the search for freedom, budget control and a taste for more simple stays.
At Huttopia, two-thirds of the 25,000 pitches sold are now reserved for travelers bringing their own equipment. This trend is even more pronounced at OnlyCamp, acquired in 2021, where nearly 90% of pitches are bare. The OnlyCamp network now has more than 100 campsites in France, compared to 8 at the time of its acquisition.
Huttopia Bivouacs extends the traditional camping model
Faced with the increasing difficulties of creating new campsites in France, Huttopia has launched Bivouacs Huttopia, a platform dedicated to nomadic travelers. The concept: to book spots in the heart of nature, on selected private land, for one or two nights.
The official platform boasts over 500 locations in France, Spain, Portugal, and Belgium. TourMaG reports that the network is expected to approach 1,000 locations by summer 2026. For travel agents and outdoor industry professionals, this growth confirms the increasing interest in hybrid formats, combining organized camping, backpacking, and micro-adventures.
Internationalization, a natural driver of growth
Huttopia is also continuing its expansion outside of France. The group has a presence in Europe and North America, notably in Belgium, the Netherlands, Spain, Portugal, Canada, and the United States. A first location in Argentina is planned for the end of 2026, in Mar Azul, south of Buenos Aires.
This opening marks a symbolic step: Huttopia is not just seeking to export a brand, but a structured nature camping model, combining traditional pitches, lightweight accommodation, simple services and integrated management.
Direct distribution, in-house software, and artificial intelligence
One of the group's most significant advantages lies in its control of distribution. Huttopia makes approximately 97% of its bookings directly, a particularly high level in a tourism sector often dependent on intermediary platforms.
This independence also rests on a long-standing technological culture. For over twenty years, Huttopia has been developing its own digital tools through Huttosoft, its in-house subsidiary. Reservations, human resources, maintenance, customer data management: several key functions are managed with internally designed solutions.
Artificial intelligence is now part of this continuity. Huttopia is a shareholder in the Bordeaux-based company Génial IA and is already deploying certain uses, notably for creating itineraries on Huttopia Bivouacs, improving the customer experience and supporting operational teams.
A diversification that goes beyond camping
The Huttopia group is no longer limited to operating campsites. Its activities are structured around several divisions. Huttopia and OnlyCamp campsites represent approximately €175 million in revenue. Equipia, the industrial branch specializing in the manufacture of outdoor accommodations, accounts for nearly €50 million. Hoscar, the collection of hotel-cafés, now comprises five establishments.
This diversification gives the group a rare depth in the outdoor tourism sector. Huttopia can design, manufacture, distribute, operate, and analyze its own tourism products. For tourism professionals, it is precisely this integration that makes the model attractive to follow.
A family group preparing for its continuity
Huttopia also emphasizes its independence. The group is developing employee share ownership through the "Tous Associés" program, with several dozen employees already holding shares. Philippe Bossanne states that he is not considering a sale and envisions the future as a family succession.
This continuity is important in a sector where consolidation operations are multiplying. Huttopia remains a growth group, but with a stable strategic direction: developing nature camping, controlling distribution and strengthening its internal tools.
A model to watch for business tourism
The Huttopia case illustrates several major developments in outdoor tourism. The resurgence of bare pitches demonstrates that demand is not limited to premium rentals. The rise of nomadic travel confirms the interest in more flexible stays. Direct sales underscore the strategic importance of customer relationships. Finally, the integration of technology and artificial intelligence shows that innovation is no longer the sole domain of large, traditional hotel groups.
For French tourism professionals, Huttopia is therefore less a simple campsite operator than a full-scale laboratory. Its development raises a central question for the coming years: will the players capable of mastering accommodation, distribution, data, and customer experience gain a significant advantage in outdoor tourism?
The Huttopia Foundation is also adding an observation and debate dimension with the launch of the Huttopia Holiday Observatory in partnership with ObSoCo, chaired by Jean Viard. The first edition is based on a survey of 4,000 French people. In parallel, the Foundation is presenting Creetopia at the Cabins Festival at the Villa Medici in Rome, from May 21 to September 28, 2026, a prototype of sustainable housing inspired by the Canadian Far North.
