Summary
LEGEND OF THE SEAS officially joins the Royal Caribbean fleet
After nearly two years of construction at the Meyer Turku shipyard in Finland, the LEGEND OF THE SEAS was officially handed over to Royal Caribbean. The delivery ceremony brought together more than 1,200 employees, partners, and crew members around Jason Liberty, President and CEO of Royal Caribbean Group, Michael Bayley, President and CEO of Royal Caribbean International, and Casimir Lindholm, Managing Director of Meyer Turku.
According to the company, this delivery marks a new stage in the development of the Icon class, designed to reinvent family holidays at sea.
“The delivery of Legend of the Seas marks another important milestone in our ambition to
continually reinvent the vacation experience,” said Jason Liberty, President and CEO of Royal
Caribbean Group. Before welcoming its first passengers, the ship is sailing to Cadiz, Spain, where final touches are being completed.
A historic first for LEGEND OF THE SEAS in the Mediterranean
The inaugural voyage is scheduled for July 4, 2026.Throughout the summer, LEGEND OF THE SEAS operates seven-night cruises in the Western Mediterranean departing from Barcelona and Rome (Civitavecchia), two ports particularly accessible for French customers.
According to Emmanuel Joly, director of Cruisepro, this is the first time that an Icon class ship has completed a full season in the Mediterranean, a positioning that brings this new generation of cruise ships closer to European travelers.
From November 2026, the ship returns to its home port of Fort Lauderdale, Florida, to offer six-night cruises in the Western Caribbean and eight-night cruises in the Southern Caribbean, with a systematic stop at Perfect Day CocoCay, Royal Caribbean's private island in the Bahamas.
LEGEND OF THE SEAS focuses on an ever more immersive experience
Royal Caribbean retains the fundamentals that made the Icon class a success while further enriching the experience offered.
The ship is structured around eight themed districts, designed to meet the expectations of all generations.
The gastronomic offering reaches an unprecedented level with 28 dining experiences, the largest ever offered on board a Royal Caribbean ship.
New features include:
Hollywoodland Supper Club, inspired by 1930s Hollywood; Royal Railway – Legend Station, an immersive five-course dining experience; AquaDome Market, a food hall bringing together several culinary concepts included in the cruise price; and a new bar specializing in fresh juices and smoothies.
On the entertainment side, passengers can enjoy a stage adaptation of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory , America's Got Talent LIVE , the Shockwave water show in the AquaTheater, and the new ice show Fusion .
Spectacular attractions that reinforce the identity of LEGEND OF THE SEAS
The ship retains the iconic facilities of the Icon class.
Travelers can enjoy Category 6, billed as the largest water park at sea, Crown's Edge, combining a suspended walkway and aerial course nearly 47 meters above the ocean, the FlowRider surf simulator, the Adrenaline Peak climbing wall and the Lost Dunes mini-golf course.
Families also have access to seven pools and water parks, including Royal Bay, which is being touted as the largest pool ever built on a cruise ship.
The ship also retains several signature features that have become emblematic of the Icon class, such as the spectacular Royal Promenade, The Pearl, presented as the largest kinetic sculpture at sea, and Central Park, which hosts more than 30,500 natural plants, restaurants and open-air concerts.
Royal Caribbean is also enriching its accommodation offering with a new version of theUltimate Family Townhouse, a spectacular three-level family suite equipped with a private water slide.
A ship powered by LNG and designed to reduce its energy footprint
LEGEND OF THE SEAS becomes Royal Caribbean's fourth ship powered by liquefied natural gas (LNG).
The cruise ship also incorporates several technologies designed to improve its energy efficiency, including heat recovery systems and electrical connections allowing shore power when port infrastructure permits.
This delivery is part of the group's environmental roadmap, which notably includes the launch of a net-zero emissions ship by 2035 and the arrival of the Hero of the Seas in 2027.
Why LEGEND OF THE SEAS is of direct interest to travel agencies
This arrival goes far beyond the launch of a new ship. It confirms Royal Caribbean's strategy of transforming its cruise ships into true holiday destinations.
For French distributors, several opportunities are emerging: an easily accessible Mediterranean season, a premium product aimed at families, a strong novelty effect and an experience capable of appealing to both first-time cruisers and travelers already familiar with the brand.
According to the specialized press, demand for premium cruises in the Mediterranean remains dynamic and the arrival of the LEGEND OF THE SEAS should further enhance the attractiveness of this destination for European customers.
This launch confirms Royal Caribbean's strategy
With LEGEND OF THE SEAS, Royal Caribbean is no longer relying solely on the size of its ships. The company is investing in a comprehensive experience where dining, entertainment, accommodations, and exclusive destinations form a true vacation ecosystem.
For tourism professionals, this third Icon-class ship represents one of the major launches of 2026. It confirms that competition between cruise lines now hinges as much on the onboard experience as on the itineraries themselves. The first Mediterranean season for an Icon ship could also boost bookings from French customers, attracted by accessible departures from Barcelona and Rome.
