Lufthansa is accelerating its move upmarket on long-haul flights. The German airline has confirmed a complete modernization of the Business Class cabins across its entire fleet of Airbus A380s, with a retrofit program starting in February 2026. This strategic decision aims to reposition the superjumbo as a competitive premium product on the most popular routes.
Summary
A retrofit focused on Business Class
According to the specialized press and information released by Lufthansa, the eight Airbus A380s currently in service will be progressively sent to Elbe Flugzeugwerke in Dresden to be fitted with a new Business Class cabin. The work will begin in the first quarter of 2026, with the first commercial service expected to resume as early as April.

The airline has opted for the Aero Vantage XL seat, which is already certified and widely proven in the market. This configuration will provide all Business Class passengers with direct aisle access, as well as a level of privacy and comfort in line with current premium long-haul standards.
An accelerated schedule to remain competitive
Choosing a product that is already certified follows a clear operational logic: reducing entry-to-service times and avoiding uncertainties related to certification processes. This approach allows Lufthansa to quickly modernize an aircraft that is very popular with passengers, without waiting for the full completion of its other cabin programs.
Each refurbished Airbus A380 will offer a configuration including a completely redesigned Business Class, alongside First Class, Premium Economy, and Economy Class. The stated objective is to complete the modernization of the entire fleet by mid-2027.
A separate product from the Allegris cabin
This new Business Class cabin is separate from the Allegris program, currently deployed on Lufthansa's Airbus A350s and Boeing 787s. The airline opted for a solution specifically designed for the A380, which is quicker to implement, in order to address the limitations of the previous 2-2-2 configuration, which had become less competitive internationally.
This deliberate differentiation allows Lufthansa to maintain a high level of comfort across its entire long-haul fleet, while taking into account the technical constraints specific to each type of aircraft.
A strong signal in the premium market
With this modernization program, Lufthansa confirms its commitment to maintaining the Airbus A380 at the heart of its long-haul strategy, particularly from its Munich hub. In a context of sustained recovery in premium demand, especially on transatlantic and Asian routes, the superjumbo remains a key differentiator in terms of capacity, comfort, and brand image.
For tourism and business travel professionals, this development strengthens Lufthansa's attractiveness in the corporate, MICE and high-end leisure segments, at a time when the quality of the onboard experience is once again becoming a key criterion for choice.
