Google is rolling out AI Previews and AI Mode in its search engine in France. These features can generate concise answers, process detailed questions, and continue a search in a conversational format. For tourism professionals, the change is tangible, but its impact on website traffic remains to be seen.
The announcement was published on July 23, 2026 by Google France. It is led by Sébastien Missoffe, Vice President and General Manager of Google France.
AI Overviews, known as AI Overviews in English versions of the engine, and AI Mode are now deployed in France on computers, mobile devices, and in the Google app for Android and iOS.
Summary
AI Previews are officially arriving in Google France
AI Previews can appear directly in the results when Google's systems deem a generated response useful for processing the query.
The search engine then displays an overview with links to other pages and further refine the search. Google does not specify that this presentation will be activated for all queries.
The French rollout comes after an international launch that began in May 2024. Google gradually expanded AI Overviews to different markets before making them available in France.
According to the specialized press, this development modifies the organization of certain results pages by placing a generated answer before some of the traditional links.

Sébastien Missoffe refers to it as a "major step"
In a post published on LinkedIn, Sébastien Missoffe presents the launch of AI Insights and AI Mode as a "major step" for Google Search in France.
The executive explains that AI Insights should provide an overview with links to the web. He presents AI Mode as a tool capable of handling more nuanced questions, whether formulated in writing, orally, or using images, and then continuing the conversation with follow-up requests.
He also indicated that Google's teams are leveraging their expertise to adapt the search engine to evolving user habits. This statement outlines the group's official position but provides no further data on the impact of these features in France, particularly on traffic sent to publishers and tourist sites.
AI Mode turns search into conversation
AI Mode is a separate experience from AI Insights. It allows you to ask a detailed question and then add follow-up requests without restarting the search from the beginning.
Queries can be entered in writing, spoken, or accompanied by an image. Google also indicates that files can be used in its new smart search field.
According to the company, Search Live allows users to conduct a voice conversation and share a device's camera feed to add visual context to the search.
Google states that AI Mode is based on Gemini 3.5, with multimodal reasoning and understanding capabilities. This is a technical description provided by the company, not an independent evaluation of the quality of the responses produced.
Research announced as three times longer

Google indicates that a query performed in AI Mode is, on average, three times longer than a traditional search.
This data relates to the length of queries entered by users. It does not mean that the answers are three times more reliable, that users stay three times longer on the search engine, or that the indexed sites receive more visits.
AI Mode also uses a technology called "query fan-out". The system breaks down a question into several sub-topics and launches different searches in parallel before producing its answer.
In the travel section, a request for trip planning could be broken down into searches related to transportation, accommodation, activities, budget, or practical considerations. However, Google does not publish any tourism-specific data in its French announcement.
What AI Insights can change for travel
Destinations, accommodation providers, agencies, transport companies, and specialized media outlets use Google to make their content and offers visible. The appearance of a generated summary adds a new step between a user's question and a potential website visit.
A traveler can now get an initial answer about the best time to visit a destination, the activities available during a weekend, the neighborhoods to stay in, or the formalities to expect.
Links to the web remain present in AI Previews and AI Mode. However, Google does not publish French data on the number of clicks generated by these links in its announcement of July 23, 2026.
Therefore, it is not possible to say that AI Insights will automatically lead to a decrease or increase in traffic to tourist sites. Results may vary depending on the search queries, the visibility of the sources, the content of the response, and user behavior.
SEO doesn't disappear with AI Insights

Google continues to present traditional results alongside its generative features. Therefore, the rollout of AI Previews does not mean the end of organic search.
The engine does not provide a method to guarantee page selection in a generated response. A publisher cannot directly enforce the use of their content in an AI Preview.
The usual principles of SEO remain applicable: publish information that is understandable, accurate, accessible to search engines, and regularly updated.
For a tourism professional, this includes opening dates, prices, cancellation policies, travel times, facilities, formalities, and access rules. This information must be easy to identify and verify.
However, there is no guarantee that long-form content, testimonials, or local expertise will be automatically featured in AI Previews. Google does not disclose the specific criteria used to determine which sources will be displayed for each query.
A new control announced for publishers
Google also announces a setting available in the Search Console for French website owners.
According to the company, this control allows them to decide whether their site can appear in certain generative AI features integrated into Search and contribute to the development of their answers.
Google clarifies that using this setting does not constitute a ranking signal for results displayed outside of these generative functions.
The group links this system to its snippet controls and Google Extended. However, these tools do not perform exactly the same function. Google Extended is used, in particular, to manage the use of content by certain Google models and artificial intelligence products, without removing pages from regular search.
Google claims its AI features increase search volume
Google indicates that users of its new AI experiences are conducting more searches than before.
The French announcement, however, provides no local figures to measure this increase. It also does not specify whether the rise in the number of requests translates into an increase in traffic sent to external sites.
This distinction is important for travel companies. More frequent use of Google does not automatically guarantee more visits, quote requests, or bookings for the businesses listed in the search results.
A major development whose effects remain to be measured
The French launch of AI Insights and AI Mode significantly changes how certain searches are presented. Users can now formulate longer queries, add visual elements, and continue their exploration in a conversational format.
For tourist sites, the main change lies in the emergence of an additional synthesis between their content and the user.
However, it is too early to announce the end of SEO, a general decline in traffic, or a guaranteed advantage for certain editorial formats. Google is not currently publishing any specific reports for the French travel sector.
The priority is therefore to monitor the relevant queries, control the Search Console data and measure changes in traffic and conversions, rather than drawing conclusions solely from Google's statements.
