Sabre vs Amadeus: the open war that could reshuffle the cards in travel tech

Date:

The tone has never been so direct. Sabre is now publicly accusing Amadeus of monopolizing the market. Behind this statement lies more than just a rivalry between two travel tech giants. We are witnessing a strategic confrontation that could redefine the rules of the game for airlines… and for the entire tourism distribution sector.

Sabre attacks Amadeus: very clear accusations

According to the specialized press, Sabre accuses Amadeus of using its dominant position in the passenger service systems (PSS) market to limit competition.

In concrete terms, Kurt Ekert, CEO of Sabre, believes that this dominance hinders the emergence of modular technological solutions, particularly those based on the Offers & Orders standard promoted by IATA.

The stakes are strategic: to enable airlines to no longer depend on a single supplier to manage all of their distribution and operations.

In other words, Sabre advocates an open and modular model. Amadeus is accused of maintaining a more closed, integrated system.

A battle that reveals a profound transformation

This conflict highlights a structural evolution in the aviation sector.

Historically, companies have relied on monolithic systems that are robust but not very flexible.

Today, a new approach is emerging: modular architectures, allowing the assembly of different technological building blocks (offers, orders, payments, loyalty).

This transition is at the heart of current tensions. It involves heavy investments, operational risks, and a questioning of existing models.

According to the specialized press, this transformation will take time, but it has already begun.

The IATA episode that left its mark

A recent event perfectly illustrates this rivalry.

During the Retailing Consortium organised by IATA in October 2025, several industry players were invited to demonstrate their solutions in real-world conditions to airlines.

Sabre participated in this exercise with partners such as Google, Hyatt and Lufthansa Systems, presenting a complete journey covering the search, command and management of disruptions.

Amadeus, for his part, did not participate in this demonstration.

As Mike Reyes stated: “Some high-profile players chose not to participate this year. Their absence was… felt.”

In a rapidly changing industry, this type of absence sends a strong signal.

Sabre is pursuing a strategy of technological openness

Faced with this situation, Sabre adopts an offensive posture.

The company highlights its Sabre Mosaic platform, designed as a modular solution allowing airlines to modernize their systems at their own pace.

At the ITB Berlin trade show in March 2026, Sabre also presented a major evolution of its architecture towards the cloud, integrating artificial intelligence technologies.

The stated objective: to offer more flexibility and reduce dependence on a single system.

A much more nuanced market reality

Despite these stances, the transformation of the market remains complex.

The costs of migrating between systems are high, which limits companies' ability to quickly switch providers.

This structural inertia partly protects established players and slows down disruption.

Moreover, some observers point out that Sabre itself has been accused in the past of similar practices, which puts the current criticisms into perspective.

In this context, the statements should also be read as strategic positioning moves.

What this war changes for tourism professionals

For agencies, TMCs and distribution players, this battle is not abstract.

It directly influences the tools used on a daily basis: GDS, access to content, commercial conditions and capacity for innovation.

In the long run, the shift towards more open systems could offer greater flexibility, but also complicate the ecosystem.

Professionals will have to navigate a more fragmented environment, with new players and new technological logics.

One thing is certain: remaining passive is no longer an option.

In short

  • Sabre accuses Amadeus of anti-competitive practices in the PSS market
  • The conflict pits a modular model against an integrated model
  • The Offers & Orders standard is at the heart of the transformation
  • Sabre is betting on its Mosaic platform and a cloud + AI strategy
  • Migration costs are hindering rapid disruption
  • Tourism professionals must anticipate these changes
