After several postponements and nearly two years behind schedule, the TGV-M is finally entering its final phase. SNCF Voyageurs and Alstom have announced that this new generation of high-speed train has received its market authorization from the European Union Agency for Railways (ERA).
The first passengers are expected to board the TGV-M on the Paris-Marseille line as early as September 2026.
For SNCF, this is a major industrial milestone. For tourism professionals, the stakes are higher: increased capacity, improved environmental performance, and an enhanced rail experience could further boost the appeal of trains on one of France's busiest routes.
Summary
The TGV-M Paris-Marseille line finally enters its operational phase
According to information provided by SNCF Voyageurs and Alstom, the first trainsets intended for commercial operation will be delivered from June 2026.
The fleet should reach six trainsets by the end of August and then thirteen trainsets by the end of the year.
Before the commercial opening, the trains will run for several weeks on the French network in order to carry out the final technical adjustments, test the equipment and finalize the preparation of the operating teams.
The Paris-Marseille line was chosen to host the first TGV-M trains. This choice appears logical given its strategic importance for business, tourist and event travel.

More seats without increasing the number of trains
One of the most significant changes concerns capacity.
The TGV-M will be able to accommodate up to 740 passengers, which is about 20% more seats compared to current generations.
This development is far from insignificant. On a route as busy as Paris-Marseille, it makes it possible to increase service without multiplying the number of trains, even though the network's capacity remains limited on certain sections.
For the destinations served, this could facilitate access for short breaks, business trips and major events without requiring additional infrastructure.
A train designed to meet the new expectations of travelers
The TGV-M is not relying solely on its capacity.
Storage space has been increased to better meet the needs of travelers. The seats were developed based on tests conducted with different customer profiles, and connectivity has been enhanced to adapt to current digital usage.
The train was also designed with modularity and simplified maintenance in mind in order to improve its long-term operation.
These developments respond to a market reality: travelers now expect the train to provide an experience similar to that of a mobile office or a temporary living space, especially on long-distance journeys.
The TGV-M is also becoming an environmental argument
According to data provided by SNCF Voyageurs and Alstom, the TGV-M was designed using 97% recyclable materials.
CO₂ emissions are expected to be reduced by 32% compared to previous generations, while aerodynamic improvements would allow for up to 20% energy savings.
The seats would also be 90% recyclable.
At a time when businesses and travelers alike are paying increasing attention to the environmental impact of their journeys, these performances provide an additional argument in favor of rail for domestic connections.
An exceptional industrial project for SNCF and Alstom
The development of the TGV-M mobilized more than 4,000 people and led to the filing of more than 400 patents according to figures provided by the manufacturers.
Nearly one million kilometers of testing were carried out to validate the performance of the train before it entered service.
In total, 160 trainsets have already been ordered by SNCF Voyageurs and Eurostar, confirming the strategic importance of this program for the future of high-speed rail transport.
Why the TGV-M Paris-Marseille is of interest to tourism professionals
Perhaps the most important information is not the commissioning date.
The real issue concerns the evolution of tourist mobility in France.
For several years, trains have been gaining ground on certain domestic routes. With more available seats, better connectivity, and enhanced environmental performance, the TGV-M could accelerate this trend.
Destinations connected to the Paris-Marseille axis already enjoy a significant competitive advantage thanks to high-speed rail. The arrival of the TGV-M further strengthens this position.
According to the specialized press, this new generation of trains represents one of the most significant investments made by SNCF since the launch of the TGV Duplex.
For tourism stakeholders, the stakes therefore go far beyond simply renewing rolling stock. This is a development that could contribute to sustainably strengthening the appeal of rail travel in the years to come.
