US Tourism: Why 4 million travelers have deserted the United States

Date:

The signal is strong enough to worry the entire global tourism industry. According to data reported by CNN, the World Travel & Tourism Council (WTTC), and Tourism Economics, international tourism to the United States is projected to decline by 5.5% in 2025. This represents approximately 4 million fewer foreign visitors compared to 2024.

Beyond the sheer number, this decline marks a turning point. Excluding the Covid-19 pandemic, this is the largest annual drop observed since the early 2000s, according to analyses cited by CNN. For tourism professionals, this trend underscores an often underestimated reality: a destination's attractiveness depends as much on its image as on its tourism offerings.

Tourism in the USA is experiencing its sharpest decline in twenty years

According to Tourism Economics, the United States welcomed approximately 4 million fewer international visitors in 2025 than in 2024. The WTTC estimates that this decline resulted in a loss of $8.4 billion in international tourism spending.

Tourism Economics goes further, estimating that the shortfall could reach up to $25 billion when compared to initially expected growth projections.

This underperformance comes as global tourism continues to grow. The WTTC points out that approximately 80 million more international travelers traveled worldwide in 2025, but that some of this growth benefited other destinations.

According to the specialized press, the United States thus appears as one of the few major international destinations to have declined over the period.

Why Tourism in the USA is Slowing Down

The decline in American tourism cannot be explained by a single cause. According to CNN and the experts interviewed by the media outlet, several factors are at play.

A more fragile international perception

CNN cites several experts who believe that the international image of the United States has deteriorated among some foreign travelers. Political debates, tensions surrounding immigration, certain security issues, and the strong polarization of American public life are regularly mentioned as factors that can influence travel intentions.

It is important to emphasize that these are expert analyses and not a single measure that can explain the observed decline on its own.

Administrative uncertainties

According to CNN, several announcements regarding a possible visa integrity tax, projects related to the collection of additional data, or certain statements around border controls have created confusion among some international travelers.

Brand USA has also launched communication campaigns aimed at clarifying several pieces of information circulating internationally.

The rise in transport costs

Geopolitical tensions in the Middle East have also impacted international air transport. According to Tourism Economics, some long-haul markets, particularly India, could be affected by increased operating costs and airspace restrictions.

The issue of tourism promotion

Several industry observers interviewed by CNN are also concerned about the funding of Brand USA, the organization responsible for promoting the American destination internationally.

In an environment where global tourism competition is intensifying, the visibility of a destination remains a major driver of growth.

Canada accounts for a large part of the decline

The Canadian market appears to be one of the main factors in this decline.

According to data cited by CNN, the decline in travel between Canada and the United States has significantly impacted overall statistics. Several studies mentioned in the survey show substantial decreases in Canadian visits to certain American metropolitan areas.

Conversely, the Mexican market grew in 2025 with approximately one million more visitors compared to the previous year.

This development shows that the situation varies greatly depending on the issuing markets.

Tourism professionals are already feeling the effects of the slowdown

On the ground, several tourism companies interviewed by CNN reported a significant decline in their international business.

In Seattle, Santa Monica and Florida, some operators explain that they have had to reduce their staff or adapt their business model in the face of lower visitor numbers.

Florida is among the most exposed destinations due to its heavy reliance on foreign visitors.

Even the major players in the sector are not entirely immune. In its latest financial results, Disney notably mentioned a certain weakness in international visitor numbers as well as a decrease in the occupancy rate of its domestic hotels.

Tourism in the USA faces stronger global competition

In my view, the main lesson goes far beyond the American case.

For a long time, certain destinations enjoyed almost automatic appeal. Today, travelers have a considerably wider choice and are more selective about their spending.

According to the specialist press, the selection criteria are evolving rapidly: ease of access, perception of the destination, stability, hospitality, value for money and overall experience are playing an increasing role in travel decisions.

The case of US tourism shows that no destination, even among the most powerful in the world, is immune to a change in dynamics.

What tourism professionals need to know

The decline observed in the United States is an important signal for the entire tourism sector.

According to available data:

  • Tourism in the USA is projected to decline by 5.5% in 2025.
  • Approximately 4 million international visitors were absent.
  • The WTTC estimates the loss at $8.4 billion in tourism spending.
  • The Canadian market accounts for a significant portion of the observed decline.
  • The United States is not expected to return to its pre-pandemic level of tourism until 2029, according to official projections cited by CNN.

According to the specialized press, this situation is a reminder above all that a destination must now constantly work on its image, its accessibility and its international competitiveness.
