Cruise Map: InfosTourisme launches a free map to track nearly 400 ships in real time

Date:

Track an MSC Cruises in the Caribbean, view the position of a Ponant vessel in the Arctic, or observe the activity of European river fleets in seconds. This is now possible thanks to Carte Croisières, the new free platform launched by InfosTourisme.

Available in French and without registration, this tool allows you to track in real time nearly 400 river and sea cruise ships all over the world.

For several years, we have observed the same problem. Maritime tracking tools exist, but they are often designed for maritime transport professionals, poorly suited to the cruise industry, or exclusively available in English. We therefore wanted to create a simple, specialized platform accessible to all tourism stakeholders.

A menu designed exclusively for cruising

Cruise Map does not aim to track all global maritime traffic. The decision was made to focus exclusively on cruise ships in order to provide a clear and relevant overview.

Ferries have been deliberately excluded. The aim is to allow travel agencies, companies, destinations, specialist journalists and cruise enthusiasts to quickly visualize the activity of the fleets that truly interest them.

At launch, approximately 393 ships are tracked on the platform, with the possibility of filtering results by company.

The world's major fleets are represented, including MSC Cruises, Costa Cruises, Royal Caribbean, Norwegian Cruise Line, Celebrity Cruises, Princess Cruises, Cunard, Holland America Line, Carnival Cruise Line, AIDA Cruises, Disney Cruise Line, Virgin Voyages, Ponant, Silversea, Seabourn, Explora Journeys, Viking, CroisiEurope and AmaWaterways for the river sector.

Real-time data to track each ship

Each ship appears on an interactive world map with a marker oriented according to its actual heading.

A click provides access to a detailed sheet including its photo, passenger capacity, year of construction, tonnage, length, navigation status, speed, heading, declared destination and last known position.

When the information is available, the platform also displays the estimated time of arrival of the ship.

Users can also directly access the company's official website as well as the Wikipedia page for the ship in question.

We have also integrated several fleet indicators allowing us to visualize in real time the number of ships currently transmitting data, those that are underway, and the average speed observed.

How does Carte Croisières work?

The platform relies on AIS (Automatic Identification System) data, the system used by ships to transmit their position, speed and heading.

Information is collected continuously via the global AISstream.io network. Unlike some systems that take readings at regular intervals, a collector remains permanently connected to receive data as soon as it is transmitted.

The positions are then displayed on a map optimized for reading fleet movements. The ship profiles are automatically enriched with information available on Wikipedia and Wikidata.

As a result, the map is constantly evolving in step with the ships sailing all over the world.

A useful tool for tourism professionals

The appeal of Cruise Map is not limited to watching ships move on a map.

A travel agency can use it to illustrate a cruise itinerary or track the route of a ship booked by a client. A tourist office or port authority can anticipate certain port calls. A specialized journalist can enrich an article with up-to-date navigation data.

I also think the tool offers a new way to observe the market. In just a few minutes, it becomes possible to visualize the movements of the world's major fleets, the busiest areas, or the activity of certain companies at a given moment.

For tourism professionals, this information often constitutes a valuable source of monitoring.

Why we launched Carte Croisières

The cruise industry continues to grow, but tools specifically designed for this sector remain relatively rare, especially in French.

With Carte Croisières, we wanted to offer a simple, free and specialized platform, capable of making navigation data accessible to the greatest number of people.

Our ambition is to continue to progressively enrich the tool so that it becomes a reference for all those who follow the news and movements of cruise ships in the world.
