Lufthansa warns: why its results hide a real zone of turbulence

Date:

Lufthansa posted record revenues, but the German group remains cautious. Behind the €39.6 billion in revenue projected for 2025, Europe's leading airline identifies a growing risk: the impact of geopolitical tensions in the Middle East on international air travel. For tourism professionals, this message extends far beyond Lufthansa and reflects a broader trend in the airline industry.

Solid results but a more uncertain context

Financially, the 2025 results appear robust. Lufthansa recorded record revenues of €39.6 billion, an increase of approximately 5%. The group's adjusted EBIT reached €1.96 billion, representing a year-on-year increase of nearly 19%. In total, the group transported approximately 135 million passengers across all its airlines.

Net profit, however, reached €1.34 billion, a slight decrease compared to the previous year. According to the specialized press and several financial analyses, this discrepancy between revenue growth and cautious outlook reflects a more unstable environment for airlines.

In its communications, Lufthansa emphasizes that the evolving geopolitical situation in the Middle East may create uncertainty regarding medium- and long-term forecasts. The group specifically mentions the dependence of a portion of global air traffic on major hubs in the Gulf.

What Lufthansa is planning for 2026

Beyond the results, several signals emerge from the strategy presented by the group for the coming year.

First, Lufthansa is adopting an increasingly geopolitical view of air transport. Future performance will depend not only on demand or fuel prices, but also on the stability of major international corridors.

Long-haul flights remain a key driver of growth. The group plans to increase overall capacity and anticipates sustained demand in several intercontinental markets.

At the same time, Lufthansa is gradually adapting its network. Some capacity has been redirected towards Asia and Africa, while several services in the Middle East have been adjusted according to the context.

Another important element is the integration of ITA Airways. Since Lufthansa acquired a stake in the Italian airline, the operation is already beginning to produce positive financial effects within the group.

The main carrier, Lufthansa Airlines, is also continuing its operational recovery. Improved operational reliability and lower compensation payments to passengers have contributed to strengthening overall performance.

Finally, the group continues to implement optimization measures, particularly in terms of organization and costs, in order to strengthen its competitiveness in a more uncertain environment.

Why geopolitical risk is becoming a major issue

For Lufthansa, the issue goes beyond the current situation. The group believes that the concentration of a portion of international traffic around the major hubs of the Gulf could create a structural vulnerability in the event of a prolonged geopolitical crisis.

This analysis reflects a significant shift in how airlines assess their prospects. Global traffic growth remains strong, but geopolitical instability is becoming increasingly crucial in network strategies.

What this means for tourism professionals

For travel agencies, tour operators and travel managers, these signals imply increased attention to network developments and long-haul capacities.

Route or frequency adjustments can alter available connections and sometimes pricing policies. In an air travel market more sensitive to international tensions, flexibility in route planning becomes a strategic advantage.

In other words, the question is no longer just where demand is growing, but also which air corridors will remain the most reliable in the medium term.

A concrete example for distribution

Imagine a corporate travel agency or a tour operator specializing in long-haul flights. If Lufthansa redirects some of its capacity to Asia or Africa, connections, availability, and fares can change rapidly. For travel professionals, this means working with alternative scenarios and closely monitoring network developments.

In short

  • Lufthansa recorded record revenues of 39.6 billion euros in 2025.
  • Adjusted EBIT reached €1.96 billion, a significant increase.
  • Net profit falls slightly to 1.34 billion euros.
  • The group warns of geopolitical uncertainty linked to the Middle East.
  • Long-haul flights remain the main driver of growth.
  • The integration of ITA Airways is beginning to produce positive financial effects.
