Orient Express Corinthian: the world's largest sailing ship aims to shake up luxury cruising

Date:

The launch is spectacular, but the real story lies elsewhere. With theOrient Express Corinthian, presented as the world's largest sailing ship, Orient Express, Accor, and Chantiers de l'Atlantique are not simply adding a new vessel to the luxury market. They are setting a new benchmark in ultra-premium cruising.

Christened on April 29, 2026 in Saint-Nazaire, this 220-meter sailing ship, flying the French flag, combines sail propulsion, fine craftsmanship, high-end hospitality, and short itineraries. For tourism professionals, it's a rare product, highly marketable, and above all, perfectly aligned with current luxury expectations: less volume, more experience, more storytelling.

A highly symbolic baptism in Saint-Nazaire

According to the specialized press and information provided by Orient Express and Accor, the Orient Express Corinthian was christened in the Joubert dry dock in Saint-Nazaire, a place steeped in history for French shipbuilding.

The ship is scheduled to depart from Saint-Nazaire on May 2, 2026, bound for the French Riviera, before beginning its inaugural season in the Mediterranean. From May to October 2026, it will sail in the Mediterranean and the Adriatic, before crossing the Atlantic in the autumn to reach the Caribbean for the winter. In 2027, its routes are expected to expand to the Eastern Mediterranean and Northern Europe.

This timetable already gives a clear indication: the Orient Express Corinthian is not conceived as a mere technological showcase. It is a fully operational tourism product, designed to quickly enter the luxury travel catalog.

The world's largest sailing ship, but not only that

The figure is impressive: 220 meters long, 54 suites, 110 passengers and 170 crew members. But the real difference lies in the promise of experience.

The Orient Express Corinthian deliberately limits its capacity, a far cry from mass-market cruise standards. Each suite boasts panoramic windows, with advertised sizes ranging from 45 to 230 square meters. A dedicated butler is assigned to each cabin. On board, five restaurants and private dining rooms are overseen by the culinary direction of Yannick Alléno. The ship also features eight bars, a 115-seat theater, a recording studio, a Guerlain spa, a swimming pool, a 16.5-meter lap pool, and a marina.

For a luxury distributor, this is a powerful argument: you are not selling a classic cruise, but a maritime extension of the imaginary Orient Express.

A technological feat serving the narrative

The ship is the first cruise ship equipped with the SolidSail wind propulsion system developed by Chantiers de l'Atlantique. Its three rigs of 1,500 m² each, totaling 4,500 m² of sail area, can provide 100% sail propulsion when weather conditions permit.

The carbon masts can be rotated 360 degrees and tilted up to 70 degrees. Sea trials conducted in February 2026 confirmed that a vessel of this size could reach 12 knots using only wind power, with a wind speed of 20 knots.

The system is complemented by hybrid LNG propulsion and energy efficiency solutions. The press release also highlights an AI-assisted detection system to monitor the presence of marine mammals and objects at sea, as well as dynamic positioning technology designed to reduce the need for anchoring.

These elements reinforce a clear positioning: luxury cruising now wants to talk about innovation, relative sobriety and exclusive experience.

Accor installs Orient Express at sea

The launch also marks a strategic step for Accor. The Orient Express brand, historically associated with trains and mythical travel, now extends into the maritime world.

Sébastien Bazin, Chairman and CEO of Accor, summarizes the ambition as follows: “Extending the Orient Express to the sea is a natural fit with the imagery of this legendary brand: a journey based on discovery, time, excellence, and elegance. The Orient Express Corinthian majestically and boldly embodies this vision. Thanks to its sail propulsion, its spaces enhanced by rare materials, and by offering an original experience designed for an international clientele, we have met a triple challenge: industrial, architectural, and artistic. This sailing ship, born from the collaboration and trust built over the past two years between Accor and Chantiers de l'Atlantique, now embodies with panache the very best of French know-how and craftsmanship.”

This quote says it all: the product relies as much on storytelling as on technology. For tourism professionals, this is precisely what creates value.

What agencies and tour operators need to look at

The Orient Express Corinthian arrives in a market where luxury cruising is evolving rapidly. Customers are looking for less standardization, more intimacy, more service, and itineraries that can be integrated into tailor-made trips.

The advertised crossings, ranging from one to four nights, offer significant flexibility. They can be booked individually or combined with a stay on the French Riviera, in Italy, the Adriatic, or the Caribbean. This is where the product becomes particularly attractive to premium travel agencies and experiential travel specialists.

The short format also makes it easier for customers who don't necessarily want to go on a week-long cruise, but who can integrate an exclusive maritime experience into a larger itinerary.

A strong signal for luxury cruising

This launch confirms a significant trend: maritime luxury is no longer simply about the size of the ship or the accumulation of equipment. It now revolves around rarity, personalization, brand heritage, and the quality of the narrative.

The Orient Express Corinthian ticks these boxes. Its French flag, its construction in France, its base in Saint-Nazaire, its links with Chantiers de l'Atlantique and its Orient Express positioning give it an immediately exploitable identity.

For professionals, the message is simple: this type of product requires a precise sales pitch. It shouldn't be presented as just another luxury cruise, but as a heritage, maritime, and ultra-exclusive travel experience.
