Trenitalia is gaining ground in France; 4.7 million passengers in four years

Date:

Four years after its arrival on French rails, Trenitalia has firmly established itself in the high-speed rail market. Since December 2021, its Frecciarossa have carried more than 4.7 million passengers in France; including 1.8 million in 2025, according to the specialized press. In 2026, the company is now aiming for a consolidation phase, with a targeted strengthening of its services rather than expansion in terms of volume.

Four years of ramping up

Since its commercial launch in December 2021, Trenitalia has been pursuing a gradual development in the French high-speed rail market. In four years, 4.7 million passengers have traveled on the Frecciarossa trains between France and Italy, with a significant acceleration expected by 2025; 1.8 million passengers this year.

The service has evolved significantly; from around ten daily trains at the beginning of 2025 to 28 trains per day from December 14, 2025, expanding travel options and improving connections.

Since November 1, 2025, Trenitalia France has been attached to FS International, the structure of the Italian public group Ferrovie dello Stato Italiane responsible for managing the European subsidiaries dedicated to passenger mobility.

Paris-Lyon; the strategic axis of the French network

The Paris-Lyon route remains the cornerstone of Trenitalia's French operations. Ridership is strong, driven by both business and leisure travelers. The company plans to enhance its service on this route by the end of 2025 to increase capacity, in a context of heightened competition in the French high-speed rail market.

Paris-Milan; traffic revived after reopening

The Paris-Milan line reopened in April 2025 after being interrupted due to a landslide in the Maurienne Valley. Trenitalia reports that ridership levels have returned to pre-incident levels, with a slight increase compared to 2022. The cross-border route remains a strategic link connecting major European cities with a fast and comfortable service.

Customer satisfaction; a differentiating factor

Surveys by the specialist press show a high level of satisfaction, with rates exceeding 95% for comfort, punctuality, and value for money. This positioning contributes to differentiating the Frecciarossa in a now open rail market.
